In the early 1990s, the South Korean government held the Korea Fighter Program (KFP) competition which led to plans to procure the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.
However, disputes erupted over costs and suspected corruption, and the government withdrew the deal and selected General Dynamics and it's F-16 as the winner.
35 F-16 Block 32s were delivered starting in 1994, and an additional 140 KF-16C/D Block 52 airframes were manufactured by KAI (Korean Aerospace Industries).
The block 32s went through an upgrade program by BAE systems starting in 2009, and the rest of the fleet is currently undergoing upgrades by Lockheed Martin to the F-16V standard.
